A trust is a legal agreement that is established when you (the settlor) transfer legal ownership of assets to another person or company (known as the trustee), to hold, manage and administer those assets not for their own benefit but for the benefit of the beneficiaries, which can be you, an individual or individuals or otherwise.
Trusts have long been used in succession planning and are now an increasingly valuable instrument in wealth and asset management. The type of assets that can be held in trust vary significantly, these may include bank accounts and investment portfolios or other asset classes such as real estate, yachts and art.
Charities, trusts and pension schemes
Specialist investment management services are also available for charities, trusts and pension schemes.
The requirements for managing portfolios for charities, trusts and pension schemes will differ for each, as will the underlying portfolios to reflect this. For example, in Will Trusts it is essential to cater for the needs of both Life Tenant(s) and Remaindermen and the attitude and objectives of pension schemes and charities can differ markedly, so that a “one cap fits all” philosophy is inappropriate in our view.
In addition to ongoing portfolio management, WHI will provide regular detailed valuations and portfolio reviews together with a comprehensive report and composite tax voucher matched to the client’s financial year. These are much appreciated by Trustees who are spared the burden of administration and banking generally associated with managing a Fund’s investment portfolio.
In advising Trustees and managing portfolios, WHI benchmarks to WM consensus weightings which provides useful guidance as to asset class weightings, which is essential given the increased legal responsibilities and constraints placed on Trustees by recent legislation.
Clearly it is essential that proper investment advice is sought by Trustees and WHI is happy to offer its specialist services in this area.
